2000 Midwest Thrmodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Conference

The 2000 Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Conference, being held in Minneapolis, Minnesota May 14-16, 2000 will bring together researchers in the areas of experimental and computational thermodynamics and statistical mechanics for the exchange of ideas and most recent research results. Particular attention will be paid to phase equilibria, adsorption, macromolecules, and biological systems. Overall, this conference is designed as a platform for young researchers (graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and young faculty members) to present and discuss their ideas and research accomplishments. The conference is being sponsored by the University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute for Digital Simulation and Advanced Computation.

QFS 2000-International Symposium on Quantum Fluids and Solids

The University of Minnesota will host the next International Symposium on Quantum Fluids and Solids, June 6-11, 2000, on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

QFS 2000 is the fifth meeting since 1992 to be entitled Symposium on Quantum Fluids and Solids, the others being held at Penn State (1992), Cornell (1995), Ecole Normale Superieure (1997), and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst, 1998). A number of other similar symposia devoted to the same topics that have been held in the previous two decades are the clear antecedents of this series. Organization of present and future symposia in this series is under the auspices of the Quantum Fluids and Solids Steering Committee.

The central topics of these symposia have traditionally been liquid and solid helium-three and helium-four and their mixtures, but other topics such as liquid and solid hydrogen and, most recently, the Bose-Einstein condensed phases of alkali atom and spin-aligned atomic hydrogen gases have been included in these meetings.

QFS 2000 will be held on the East Bank Campus of the University of Minnesota in an informal setting intended to promote communication among the participants and to minimize their costs. There will be sessions for oral presentations by invited speakers and some selected subset of contributors and poster sessions for other contributions. In order to provide the maximum amount of focus for the conference and exchange among participants, there will be only one session at a time.

As in recent symposia, refereed proceedings will be published as one or two issues of the Journal of Low Temperature Physics. The symposium will include as broad a range of topics within the field as possible, including fundamental investigations, applications, and instrumentation. Input from other fields that might have a bearing on quantum fluids and solids will be sought. Although the major emphasis of this symposium is likely to be experiment, a strong component of theory will also be sought.
