Research Director for Storage Systems

The Digital Technology Center's - Intelligent Storage Consortium (DISC) has been created to provide leadership in the research and development of Intelligent Storage Systems. Systems that include storage, networking, management and security and that support applications in new ways.

DISC brings together University of Minnesota researchers and graduate students, representatives of the storage / networking industry and public sector agencies – all of whom share an interest in the future of storage and many unknown and unresolved R&D questions.

The goal of the consortium program is to provide focused technology research opportunities for members and affiliates, to train outstanding new graduate students, and to push the state of the art in selected research programs. DISC emphasizes the application of advanced storage technologies to real problems with real requirements driven by the consortium members.

Recent programs have addressed Object-based Storage Devices, Long-Term Archives and Key Management, Metadata Server Architectures, Exhaustive Search, MAID and GreenStor and scientific query processing in very large scientific databases. These programs have been supported at differing levels by LSI, Sun, Symantec, IBM, Seagate, Brocade, Unisys, ITRI, ETRI and government agencies such as DOE (LANL), ONR and NSF.
