The Institute has several editors for creating files and editing text. The UNIX standard editors, ed, ex, sed, and vi, emacs and xemacs, are available on all the Institute's UNIX workstations.
The ed and ex editors are line mode editors, i.e., users do not see the whole file a screen at a time. The sed editor is a batch (non-interactive) editor that takes it commands from an input file which users specify. The vi editor is an interactive editor. It is widely used on most UNIX systems and has a large number of commands. On-line information is available about the above three editors be entering man ed, man ex, man sed, or man vi.
The UNIX workstations also have the emacs editor. It is an interactive editor that is extensible and customizable and includes extensive documentation within the editor itself. It supports multiple simultaneous editing sessions and has many other useful features such as a full undo capability, automatic backup of files, an EDT emulator, etc. A tutorial is available for it. Information is also available by entering man emacs. The editor xemacs provides a point and click interface to emacs.
