Temporary Files: The /scratch file system.

The /scratch file system is set up to store temporary files. The /scratch file system is available from all UNIX workstations. The /scratch file system is never backed up.

Files in /scratch that haven't been modified for 30 days are automatically removed. You may ask for an extension on your scratch directory. To do so, send email to help@msi.umn.edu. Include the name of the directory and a date when the files can be removed. All files in the specified directory will not be removed until the given date. On the given date, files not modified for more than 30 days will be automatically removed.

Once again, files not modified for 30 days are automatically removed. Touching files will not affect the deletion date.

Temporary Files: The VideoScratch file system.

The VideoScratch file system consists of two 80 GB disks in a RAID configuration for fast temporary working space on the video editing workstation m2 (Mac G4). THIS SPACE WILL NEVER BE BACKED UP. You may leave files here that you are working on but if additional space is needed any files older than 14 days may be deleted first. Exceptionally large files or folders of files may also be deleted at any time. Please plan accordingly.

You may ask for an extension on your video directory (folder). To do so, send email to help@msi.umn.edu. Include the name of the directory and a date when the files can be removed. Files in the specified directory will not be removed until the given date.

Please clean up when you are done with work files on this space.

Temporary Files on workstations.

In addition to the /scratch file system, there are temporary file systems on s10, l1 and l2 that are local to the machine. Local file systems are much faster than home directories and the /scratch file system. The names of the file systems are /scratch.local1 and /scratch.local2 To see if there is a local scratch file system, type df and look for /scratch.machine-name in the list of file system.

These file systems are never backed up and are cleaned up regularly. Please do not use these for storage of files for extended periods of time.

This information is available in alternative formats upon request by individuals with disabilities. Please send email to alt-format@msi.umn.edu or call 612-624-0528.
