Minnesota Supercomputing Institute (MSI) Researchers

MSI researchers are principal investigators on MSI research projects and all other researchers whom they designate as members of their groups. MSI principal investigators may update their researchers' lists by mail or by phone to the Research Programs Administrator, Barbara Opal (projects@msi.umn.edu, 612-625-0012, Walter Library 599A). MSI research facilities are available for use by all MSI researchers.

MSI Location

MSI is located in Walter Library on the East Bank campus of the University of Minnesota. It is housed on the entire fifth floor and parts of the basement and fourth floor.

Access for MSI Researchers

All MSI researchers are included on a list maintained and regularly updated by MSI. Entry into most areas of MSI requires a U Card; researchers' U Cards are coded for access to the secure areas seven days a week, 24 hours a day. To have your U Card or the U Card of a guest authorized, contact the Assistant to the Director, Bill Hellriegel (hellr@msi.umn.edu, 612-624-1356, Walter Library 594). Mr. Hellriegel will connect you with Digital Technology Center (DTC) Assistant Facilities Coordinator and Seminar Coordinator, Alison Baerwald (baerwald@dtc.umn.edu, 612-624-0811, Walter Library 499C).

The central elevators in Walter Library (these are the two elevators that face each other in the center of the building) provide access to the first through fifth floors. These elevators do not require a U Card Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. to reach the fourth and fifth floors. A validated U Card is required for access to the fourth and fifth floors outside of these hours. The second and third floors are accessible during library hours. MSI and DTC researchers do not have after-hours access to library space.

The single elevator on the east side of the building nearest to Northrop Mall provides open access to the basement, first floor, and second floor, as well as validated U Card access, at all times, to floors four and five.

Reception for MSI is shared between MSIÕs reception desk in 599 Walter Library and the DTCÕs reception desk in 499 Walter Library. Both desks are staffed 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. The main telephone number for MSI is 612-624-0528.

Conference Rooms

MSI has one conference room on the fifth floor of Walter Library: Room 527, which is within the secure area of the fifth floor. The space seats 8-10 people and can be reserved by contacting Debbie Schutta (dschutta@msi.umn.edu, 612-624-0528, Walter Library 599). It is available for use by MSI staff and researchers and for meetings involving other persons and matters somehow related to MSI.

Small conference space for 12-15 people is available in each of rooms 404 and 405 Walter Library. These rooms are located off the DTC Commons Area, Room 401 Walter Library. Video conferencing equipment is available for use in either room, and both rooms must be reserved through the DTC receptionist at 612-624-9510.

Scientific Presentation Room

The Scientific Presentation Room (room 402 Walter Library), located off the DTC Commons Area, is designed to seat 88 people comfortably and has a maximum capacity of 228. The room contains two projectors and two screens and has a VCR, a DVD player, and a CD player. The room also contains jacks for connecting computers with the projectors. This room is used for seminars and tutorials and must be reserved by contacting the DTC receptionist at 612-624-9510.

Copy Machines

A copier is located in room 496 Walter Library and may be used by Institute researchers who have U Card access and a copying budget. A budget number can be set up by contacting the DTC receptionist at 612-624-9510. This copier is only for small jobs; for larger jobs, researchers should use the copy center on Floor 2 of Walter Library or the copy center in the basement of adjacent Johnston Hall.

FAX Machine

A fax machine is also located in room 496 Walter Library and, in addition to DTC and MSI staff, can be used only by DTC and MSI faculty with offices in Walter Library. Each use of the fax machine must be recorded on a log sheet, and entry to the room is by U Card.

Lunchroom/Kitchen

Lunchroom facilities are located in room 410 Walter Library for DTC and MSI researchers and staff. Reservations are not required to use this room. Equipment includes a refrigerator and two microwave ovens. Researchers and employees may store food in the refrigerator if it is marked with their names. Other rules for the room's use are posted there.

A small kitchenette is located in room 542 Walter Library. This room contains a microwave oven.
