Nifty Telnet-SSH Client for MacOS 9

Getting Started with Nifty Telnet-SSH

Nifty Telnet-SSH is an enhanced version of NiftyTelnet and is, by far, the best free SSH client for MacOS 9. It is fully SSH v1.x compliant and its most recent release (r3) even has SCP support, for encrypted remote file transfers. If you use MacOS 9, Nifty Telnet-SSH is an absolutely essential tool. It is available from www.lysator.liu.se/~jonasw/download/niftytelnet-1.1-ssh-r3.hqx . Installation Note: In order to install Nifty Telnet-SSH, you'll need to install StuffitExpander.

Nifty Telnet-SSH requires 950KB and is reported to run on any MacOS (8.X-9.X). No browser required (other than for reading this and downloading software) File transport implemented via SCP rather than FTP/Fetch.

Start the Nifty Telnet-SSH application.

You need to configure a connection Shortcut under Nifty Telnet-SSH to simplify the process, so, select edit or new to edit a new connection. This will bring the following dialog box.

The items to chage are: Shortcut Name (ex. msi i7), Host Name (ex. i7.msi.umn.edu), Protocol (change this to SSH-3DES), User Name (ex. goldy). Once these changes are made, select Save As and save the new shortcut.

Now select your new shortcut (ex. msi i7) and select Connect.

On the first-time you connect, you will see the security dialog below.

Select Accept & Save. You will now be prompted to log in as in the dialog below.

Once you have selected Login, you will now be connected as seen below.

You are now connected via SSH to the institute.
