X Window Emulators

In order to access X Window applications from your Macintosh or PC running the Windows operating system, you need Secure Shell (ssh) and an X Window emulator installed. There are many different free and commercial offerings, and the University has some low cost licenses for University of Minnesota faculty and staff.

X Window Emulators for Windows

Xming is a free X Windows emulator for Windows that works well for most applications. Download and install instructions can be found on the Xming X Server page.

For University of Minnesota faculty and staff Xwin32 is an X Window emulator that is available at a reduced cost through Academic and Distributed Computing Services (ADCS). For more information on using Xwin32, see X Window for Windows by MSI User Support.

X Window Emulators for Mac OS X

Apple X11 is available free from Apple and is included with OS 10.X. For more information on using Apple X11, see X Windows for Mac OS X by MSI User Support.
