Cast-in-Place Concrete Connections for Precast Deck Systems

The Minnesota Department of Transportation has developed a new design for a bridge system that utilizes precast concrete elements and has a cast-in-place (CIP) deck, termed a precast composite slab span system (PCSSS). During the design process, much attention was given to certain features of the structure to reduce the likelihood of the development of reflective cracking in the cast-in-place concrete above the joint between adjacent precast inverted tee sections. To check some of the design assumptions and the behavior of the system in areas of interest, finite element (FE) modeling of the system has been conducted. The results of the FE model are being used to investigate the behavior of a laboratory bridge test specimen and in the development of subassemblage tests.
