Functional Genomics of Legume Nutrient Acquisition

This projects focuses on whole-genome analysis of transcripts expressed during plant response to the stress of low nutrient availability. The expression of genes that respond in legume roots and root nodules to low phosphorus, nitrogen, and/or iron are evaluated. The species include Lupinus, Phaseolus, and Medicago. Affymetrix GeneChips are used to analyze the expression of genes as plants adapt to nutrient stress. The project also includes assessment of whether single nucleotide changes occur in genes if molecular markers can be defined.
