Genetic Mapping in Wheat

These researchers are mapping genes in wheat that control important traits, including disease resistance and grain quality. Segregated populations of 100–200 lines are phenotyped in appropriate environments and populated with several hundred DNA markers. This is followed by construction of genetic linkage maps and analysis to identify DNA markers associated with genes or quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting that trait. The group has several QTL mapping populations currently active: for leaf rust resistance, for stem rust resistance, for Fusarium head blight resistance, for pre-harvest sprouting, and for grain end-use quality. The researchers are using the CGL for this project.
