Computational Biomechanics and Biotransport

The Barocas group uses finite-element methods to explore biomechanical and biotransport phenomena in the eye and in bioengineered tissues. Their work focuses on answering questions about the shape of the iris under various conditions and how different diseases of the iris contour evolve. They are specifically interested in angle closure glaucoma and pigmentary glaucoma, in which the iris deforms pathologically. They also work on the materials science of bioartificial tissues: how do the underlying structure and composition of an artificial tissue determine its macroscopic mechanical properties? This question is explored by means of a multiscale model, allowing the researchers to change the microstructure explicitly and locally, and then to simulate the macroscopic mechanics of the tissue.
