Proteomics and Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease

One million people in the United States suffer from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a serious lifelong ailment without known cause or cure that frequently begins in childhood. Proteomic techniques use new sensitive technology and methods to identify proteins that can increase our understanding of disease processes, identify biomarkers to help diagnose disease, and lead to new therapies. During this period, the researchers have used Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) to study proteins identified in normal individuals and in IBD patients. IPA has allowed them to identify potential biomarkers and also to identify alternative sample sources for analysis. For example, comparisons of colon mucosal proteins between normal and IBD samples identified many different proteins of which 60 have been described in urine. Thus, future studies, in addition to continuing to study colonic mucosal proteins, will also include study of urine proteins as the researchers attempt to identify better biomarkers to aid in the diagnosis of IBD.
