Fast Solutions for Elastic-wave Imaging of Solid Bodies and Soft Tissues

The aim of this research project is the development of an advanced analytical and computational framework for the rapid, three-dimensional imaging of subterranean obstacles using elastic (i.e., seismic) waves. The researchers are focusing on resolving the location, topology, geometry, and material characteristics of subsurface obstacles (e.g., underground facilities, material defects, cancerous lesions) from non-invasive waveform measurements performed on the material surface. The group uses the supercomputers to develop an efficient technique for solving the featured inverse scattering problem that would account for the full three-dimensional nature of the induced wave propagation in a systematic and rigorous manner. A comprehensive three-dimensional identification of subsurface obstacles by means of these proposed methods may find use in defense applications, oil prospecting, construction in urban areas, and medical diagnosis. Specific techniques used include boundary-only reconstruction, the linear sampling method, and the concept of topological sensitivity. These methodologies have recently found applications in medical imaging.
