Mechanical Properties of Bacterial Biofilms

Biofilms are bacteria living in the communities of self-secreted slime and are ubiquitous in nature. In order to control their growth on surfaces, it is important to know about their mechanical properties. This can be achieved with a micro-cantilever test method; in this test a micro-scale uni-axial tensile test is conducted and recorded under a microscope. The resulting video file is analyzed for various mechanical properties including strength, modulus and failure strain. The researchers are also exploring the effect of different chemical and enzymatic treatments on the mechanical properties of biofilms.
