Proteomics for SoyCaP Trial

The role of soy isoflavones in prostate cancer prevention is an area of active study. Research suggests that the soy isoflavonoids are an important and perhaps primary group of bioactive compounds in soy that exert these protective effects, but data on the effects of soy isoflavonoids on the prostate tissue is limited. The main aim of this study is to assess the effects of a soy intervention on prostatic protein expression in 21 men at high risk for prostate cancer. The subjects receive either: a soy protein isolate (SPI) with 107 ± 5 mg isoflavones aglycone equivalents per day; SPI largely devoid of isoflavones; or milk protein. Relative protein expression in post-intervention biopsy samples of these three groups will then be quantified. Data obtained from this study will enable the researchers to ascertain whether soy intervention causes alterations in prostatic protein expression in a manner that is consistent with chemoprevention. Additionally, understanding the proteins and the related pathways that are altered by the soy intervention will provide mechanistic insights and may help in the identification of novel biomarkers.
