Creation of a Visual Database of Chimpanzee Behavior

The study of the chimpanzees of Gombe National Park, Tanzania, has been continuous since 1960. Over this period, 35mm photographs have been taken of the chimpanzees, both in black and white and in color. Since 1993, over 600 hours of video have been shot during daily follows of the chimpanzees through the forest. The purpose of this project is to enter all this visual material into a database. The material will be stored at several different resolutions so that it can be used both for high-quality illustrations and as web images. The database will be constructed so that the material can be indexed in progressively more detail. The long-term aim is to make the database searchable on the web to qualified users for research and education. The project uses the SDVL.
