Discovery of New Cancer Biomarkers in Human Prostate Secretions

These researchers are using iTRAQ labeling methods together with two-dimensional chromatography and mass spectrometry to identify alteration in expression of proteins in prostate tissues and their secretions in both human and animal model specimens. They have identified a known prostate cancer marker, prostate specific membrane antigen, to be elevated in secretions from men with prostate cancer, as well as a protein known to be down-regulated in prostate cancer, lactate dehydrogenase B. They are verifying the altered expression of a number of proteins that they have found in cancer, but for which there are no published studies related to prostate cancer. The researchers are expanding their studies to prostate cancer and benign tissues and to a rat model of prostate inflammation.
