Effect of Endothelial DDAH1 Gene Deletion on the Development of Left Ventricular Dysfunction

This group conducted research into the causes of aging-related cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction. They hypothesized that chronic accumulation of asymmetric methylarginines caused by reduced activity of dimethylarginine dimethylaminohydrolase (DDAH) contributes to these conditions. Two DDAH isoforms have been identified (DDAH1 and DDAH2), but most recent studies indicate that overall DDAH activity is mainly determined by DDAH1. These researchers recently demonstrated that DDAH1 is predominantly expressed in vascular endothelial cells. The group used resources at the BSCL, CGL, and SDML to assist in this project.
