Analysis of Disease Resistance in Wheat and Brachypodium

This project involves research to identify genes that accompany resistance in wheat to infection by rust pathogens. The researchers use Affymetrix GeneChips to identify changes in gene expression between resistant and susceptible wheat lines after exposure to the causal agent of both leaf and stem rust, and to track the expression of genes of interest over time. They are also employing the model plant Brachypodium as a surrogate to understand more fully the molecular basis of rust resistance in wheat. The researchers are currently characterizing temporal aspects of the observed gene changes in wheat and Brachypodium seedlings to the pathogen causing stem rust.
