Genomic Explorations in Biotechnology

These researchers are involved in several projects using the MSI laboratories. In one, they are using genomics and proteomics to investigate recombinant Chinese hamster ovary cells. These industrially important cells carry many desirable phenotypic traits, but the alterations at the genomic level that confer those traits are not well understood. The researchers are seeking a better understanding of those key genetic alterations, which will facilitate the development of new cells lines and new processes.

A second project uses data mining to analyze cell-culture manufacturing processes. The data archives of manufacturing plants may have valuable information that could enhance process robustness. This data-mining effort will aid in developing effective control strategies to ensure process consistency and high productivity.

A third project concerns biosynthesis in Streptomyces, which are important microorganisms because they produce more than two-thirds of clinically used antibiotics, as well as other bioactive molecules. The goal of the project is to identify the possible positions of important genes on the regulatory hierarchy of secondary metabolism for these organisms, which would serve as a model for studying synthesis and regulation of a variety of industrially important natural products.
