REM Strength Analysis of Normal and Diseased Bone Samples

The purpose of this research is to segment and create three-dimensional volumes of different CT images of bone using MIMICS and to develop a three-dimensional finite-element model for finite element-based strength analysis using ABAQUS. The researchers are developing a model for the strength analysis of bone CT images. Bone strength depends on quantitative properties (bone mass, bone density, and modulus of elasticity) as well as properties of bone quality such as the structure parameters of trabecular bone (trabecular orientation and thickness, length, number, and separation distances of trabeculae). This model will allow the determination of patient bone quality, which will be eventually related to bone health.
