Myogenic Potential of Extraocular Muscle Satellite Cells

The extraocular muscles are spared in a number of muscular dystrophies. This lab’s working hypothesis is that this is due to the presence of an expanded or unique muscle progenitor cell. The researchers are trying to molecularly characterize a target myogenic precursor cell, thus far identified as positive for CD34 and negative for Sca1, CD45, CD31, and m-cadherin. This precursor cell type is retained in greater percentages in adult eye muscles compared to limb muscle, and is also retained in the eye muscles of mice models of muscular dystrophy.
