Fungal Evolution

Research in the May lab concerns the evolution of fungi in relationship to their ecological interactions with plants. Projects include the evolution of Ustilago maydis, a pathogen of maize, and endophytic fungi living inside of plants from agricultural and natural populations. The researchers use molecular, phylogenetic and genetic, gene expression, and metabolomic approaches. DNA sequence, gene expression profiles, genome mapping, and mass spec are tools employed in these studies.
