GPU Computing and Numerical Electrostatics

These researchers are developing a numerical electrostatics simulation. The "toy” problem, investigating the field created between the earth and a thundercloud, is primarily a vehicle for learning how to re-write code to best perform on an NVIDIA Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) with NVIDIA’s CUDA library. Initial development was performed on small GPUs, and the researchers used the resources at the SDVL to further understand the code that is ported to run on a GPU.
