Genetic Epidemiology of Cardiovascular Disease and Associate Risk Factors

This research project seeks to detect, localize, and characterize genes involved in the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its associated risk factors (e.g., diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, etc.). Recent technological advances in molecular biology and genetics have provided new opportunities to explore the genetic architecture of complex diseases and traits such as CVD. Genetic epidemiological research on such traits, however, requires data on thousands of individuals, hundreds of genetic markers, and complex statistical models that are computationally demanding. The supercomputers allow the researchers to manage these high-dimensional datasets and construct models with higher order gene-gene or gene-environment interactions that cannot be practically evaluated on standard computers and to conduct simulation experiments.
