Wakota Bridge Monitoring Program

These researchers investigated the procedures required by the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) specifications of the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) for determining thermal forces in bridge piers. Strain gauges and linear potentiometers have been installed in the Wakota bridge superstructure and substructure and will be used to determine the axial forces, bending moments, strains, and stresses in the structure. Of primary interest are the magnitudes of the changes in pier axial forces, bending moments, and shear forces. The pier forces inferred from the field measurements were used, in conjunction with analysis of the bridge to evaluation, and if necessary, modify the AASHTO LRFD specifications procedures for thermal effects. The analysis took the form of a three-dimensional finite element model constructed in ABAQUS.
