Experience With MPI: Applications of Parallel Computation

The need for parallel computation is increasing as problems become more advanced and as the ability to perform parallel computation is made available on all types of personal machines. The purpose of this work is to explore the Message Passing Interface (MPI) for parallel computation on large computation clusters, and gain experience programming with MPI as well as a better understanding for how parallel computations can be achieved. The code for this project has been developed on an 8-core machine at the University of Minnesota Duluth using MPI. The researchers’ current efforts are to explore the performance of this code base on a larger MPI-based cluster.
