Phylogenetics and Niche Evolution in Live Oaks (Quercus series
These researchers are examining evidence for genetic structure and diversity within the live oaks and the influence of genetically based variation on traits predicting species range limits and gene flow. They are also examining the historical biogeographic explanations for population genetic structure related to morphological and physiological traits.
To do this, the researchers are analyzing sequence data from across the live oak range in seven different species and multiple populations within each species. They use nuclear microsatellites, non-recombining nuclear sequences within ITS and NIA-i3, and chloroplast DNA sequences that were obtained from samples collected throughout the range of live oaks. They use the software program Sequencher for this research.
