Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Marker Identification for Photosensitive and Photorefractory Turkey Breeder Hens

Genetic variation in reproductive efficiency within turkey flocks can be a primary source for improvement in breeder hen turkeys’ egg production. From advances in molecular genetic technologies, economically important traits (i.e. egg production) can be identified and selected using marker-assisted selection program. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are used as markers for phenotype specific genetic selection. These researchers use expression arrays to screen photosensitive continuously laying and out of production photorefractory hens at the end of the laying season for candidate marker genes. Sequencing analysis will be conducted to find coding SNPs in the candidate marker genes. SNP patterns will be established and confirmed in larger turkey flocks. Once the researchers establish SNP patterns for continuous egg laying, SNPs will be used to select for persistent laying in breeder poults. This genetic test can be routinely run using DNA samples from poults’ pinfeathers. The researchers use MSI resources to facilitate the microarray analysis.
