Optimal Structured Source Code Design

These researchers are trellis-encoding an information source. The code to be used is to be selected from a structured set of codes. These are codes whose generating matrices have row factorizations in which the irreducible factors have pre-specified degrees and multiplicities. The selected code must be optimal in the sense of yielding the smallest percentage of reproduction errors for the given source model. The researchers employ a selection algorithm that takes advantage of the algebraic structure of the codes. In order to train the selection algorithm so that it will select the optimal code, they use MSI resources to compute the optimal code for many structured sets of codes.
