Genomics Analysis of Wheat, Barley, Soybean, and Maize

These researchers use resources at MSI to study aspects of the barley, wheat, soybean, and maize genomes. One area of interest is the gene expression profiles of barley and wheat during infection with Fusarium graminearum. The researchers are also examining the gene expression profiles in four low-branching barley mutants. In addition, they are examining gene expression in maize shoot apical meristems. Another area of interest is genetic mapping of loci in barley and maize that control agronomic and morphological traits. The researchers are mapping loci that that control shoot apical meristem size and leaf traits in maize. They also plan to map loci that control agronomic traits in wild barley accessions. They use association genetics approaches to mapping loci controlling agronomic traits in barley. They are initiating efforts to examine the barley genome through the use of comparative genomic hybridization and next generation sequencing technologies.
