Numerical Simulation of Internal Combustion Engines
Numerical simulation is a rich area of research in the field of internal combustion engines. This researcher is using the MSI resources to compliment experimental efforts in internal combustion engines currently underway in the Center for Diesel Research at the University of Minnesota. The first step is to estimate chemical kinetics for combustion reactions using the Chemkin software. Initial studies will examine homogeneous mixture models for engines to determine predicted rates of pollutant formation. Additional work will look into the simulation of sprays using KIVA 3V to examine novel diesel engine injection systems. Coupled with fluid mechanics, spray modeling will require considerable computational power beyond what is available on desktop computers.
