Force, Elasticity, and Interface Pressure Sensors for Biomedical Applications

The overarching goal of this project is to develop and evaluate micro sensors for a soft tissue probe that can measure in vivo elasticity properties of tissue. The proposed device will have a geometry similar to a pen, and will be used simply by touching or pushing against any segment of soft tissue in order to make a measurement.

There are three specific aims in this project. The first is to develop, design, and fabricate micro-sensors and integrate them into a modular soft tissue probe. The developed soft tissue probe will be able to measure both the Young’s modulus and shear modulus of elasticity of in vivo soft tissue. The second is to characterize the performance of the developed soft tissue probe by using it to measure properties of different types of fresh pig tissue. The researchers will then compare the properties measured by the new probe with measurements made using traditional in vitro methods. Finally, the researchers will use the developed sensor probe to compare in vivo and in vitro properties of tissue and document changes in properties that occur due to tissue removal and measurement outside the organism. MSI resources are used to help analyze the sensor design.
