Investigation of Respiration Influences on the Monitoring of Lung Ventilation Using Electrical Impedance Tomography
Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a functional imaging technique that can reconstruct images of resistivity distribution in an object of interest based on boundary or surface electrical measurements. One promising application of EIT is to assess pulmonary ventilation and fluid volume changes. With EIT pulmonary application, the electrodes are placed around the chest in a two-dimensional ring, and the image is reconstructed based on assumptions that the object is rigid and circular and the measured resistivity change in EIT image is caused only by the actual resistivity change of the lung due to the changes of air or fluid. Structural changes and tissue/organ movements due to respiration are rarely considered. This project seeks to investigate the effects of respiration using in vivo human thoracic models. The success of this project will provide a good understanding on the sources of the resistivity changes therefore significantly advance the pulmonary applications of EIT technique.
