Subject-Specific Computational Modeling and Functional Muscle Activity Imaging

The goal of this research is to develop a muscle activity imaging (MAI) technique by combining the bioelectrical source imaging technique with the subject-specific electrophysiological modeling approach to non-invasively image internal muscle activities and their propagation from multi-channel surface EMG recordings. The subject-specific computational model building approach has been developed in the researcher’s lab and will be used to build the realistic geometric computational model for the proposed MAI research from MR images provided by the Visible Human Project. The bioelectrical source imaging approach will be used to spatiotemporally image internal muscle activities, based on the realistic geometric computational model, from non-invasive multi-channel surface EMG recordings in order to develop the proposed MAI technique. Therefore the novel MAI technique will correlate the surface EMG measurements and the specific active muscle fibers that generate the surface EMG signals, so that the need to place needle electrodes into muscles to obtain accurate EMG recordings could be eliminated in some clinical applications.
