Effect of Imperfect Detectability on Estimates of Wind Generator Fatalities

Abstract:

Effect of Imperfect Detectability on Estimates of Wind Generator Fatalities

Wind energy development is “green” in the sense that it releases no greenhouse gases, but effects on wildlife populations need further study. In many situations searches are made at wind farms for fatalities of birds and bats likely caused by the wind generators. Searches are imperfect, because some carcasses may have been removed by scavengers before the search, and observers may miss carcasses that are present. This study is intended to assess the importance of those biases and to evaluate methods for addressing them. MSI resources are needed to conduct large-scale simulations of a variety of scenarios addressed by a variety of estimators.
