Generation of Ecological Metadata Language Archive Files for Distribution for CCESR

Abstract:

Generation of Ecological Metadata Language Archive Files for Distribution for Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve

Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (CCESR) is a University of Minnesota-owned ecology research site, designated by the NSF as a Long-Term Ecological Research site. Since 1964, data have been collected at CCESR and archived in various electronic formats. To better serve the research community and meet their obligations to the National Science Foundation, these researchers use an MSI-hosted Oracle database to house all data collected at CCESR. Additionally, MSI hosts a MySQL database for tracking data access as well as web applications. These data are made available dynamically through web applications on the Cedar Creek website. These data are available in multiple formats, including Ecological Metadata Language (EML), an XML metadata schema developed by the Ecological Society of America (more information). The group also uses MSI supercomputing resources to model plant species dynamics using the data housed in the MSI-hosted database.
