Leaf Rust Resistance in Wheat and Evolutionary Relationships in the Leaf Rust Pathogen Puccina triticina

Genes in wheat (Triticum aestivum) that confer resistance to the leaf rust pathogen (Puccinia triticina) are being mapped on specific chromosomes using different molecular markers DArT, SSR markers, and SNPs combined with phenotypic rust responses in seedling plants and adult plants. Sequence variation in forms of Puccinia triticina and different types of wheat hosts will be assessed in different structural/functional genes and in rDNA for use in coalescence analysis to determine the evolutionary relationships between the different forms.
