Mechanics of the Decellularized Lung Scaffold

Abstract:

Mechanics of the Decellularized Lung Scaffold

Decellularization of whole organs is proving to be a viable method to generate tissue engineering scaffolds that could be used to grow new organs from stem cells. The mechanics of the lung are critical to normal function, so careful mechanical characterization of the decellularized lung scaffold is essential in determining how the scaffold needs to be modified to bring the mechanics more towards normal lung. These researchers are using imaging intensive protocols to quantify stress and strain (atomic force microscopy and uniaxial/biaxial testing), and they use the resources at MSI to assist with their analysis.
