Metagenomic Analysis of Bacteria Growing on Biofilters
Analysis of Complex Bacterial Communities by Illumina Sequencing of 16S rRNA Gene Fragments
The LaPara laboratory investigates a number of bacterial communities related to drinking water and municipal wastewater. They then attempt to connect the structure of these bacterial communities to either public health or to the function of treatment operations. Their current approach is to use the polymerase chain reaction to amplify a fragment of the gene of interest (usually 16S rRNA genes) and then to sequence these genes using Illumina HiSeq or Illumina MiSeq technology. The data generated by these platforms are very large, so MSI resources are necessary to process the data.
