Monte Carlo-Based Dose Calculations for Radiotherapy
Monte Carlo simulation is the most accurate method for absorbed dose calculation in radiotherapy. It is especially useful in calculating dose distributions in heterogeneous patient tissues where the effects of electron transport cannot be accurately handled with conventional, deterministic dose algorithms. This project uses the Monte Carlo method to calculate absorbed dose for lung cancer using Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) or Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). Simulation of accelerator photon beams and electron beams will be performed to provide information for improving physics modeling in our clinic Treatment Planning System (TPS). The accuracy of dose calculations will be evaluated by phantom measurements.
