The Role of Genetic Load in Crop Improvement
The objective of this research is to determine the effect of domestication and strong selection during crop improvement on the level of deleterious mutations in self-fertilizing crops. The infrastructure developed for this analysis will also be applied to determine the genomic distribution of deleterious mutations in the genome of barley and soybeans. The researchers are assembling DNA and RNA sequence relative to a reference, identifying single nucleotide polymorphisms, and using probabilistic approaches to determine the proportion of mutations that are likely to be deleterious.
