Dedicated Hardware

MSI provides over 125 million hours worth of computing for free to University of Minnesota faculty and their collaborators on an annual basis (Getting Access to MSI). Access to MSI’s computing resources is limited by Service Units (SUs), which are allocated each year as part of the MSI account renewal process. Requests for a large number of SUs must be justified and these requests are reviewed annually before being granted in order to balance the demands on MSI computing resources. In some cases, UMN faculty are engaged in research that requires guaranteed or dedicated access to computing resources. Because the SU allocation process cannot guarantee access to resources, UMN faculty may purchase hardware that will be added to our existing HPC systems and dedicated to their group’s use.

Please contact help@msi.umn.edu if you are interested in purchasing dedicated access to HPC resources.

Dedicated Second-Tier Storage

Dedicated Second-Tier Storage is a a high density storage platform, well suited for storing less frequently used data. Second-Tier storage is built on a Ceph storage cluster and may be accessed using the S3 interface. Second-Tier storage can also be accessed via Globus $45.73/TB/Yr $130/TB/Yr

Dedicated Third-Tier Storage

Dedicated Third-Tier Storage is a a high density tape storage platform accessible via an S3-like protocol, well suited for storing archival data. Third-Tier storage is suitable for many-terabyte data storage needs. The Third Tier is purchased in units of tapes (redundancy is included) for five years. The tape capacity depends on the data itself. A minimum of 6 TB may be stored on a tape; tapes, depending on data compression, may hold as much as 12 TB.

$456.12 for 5 years (2x redundant)
