Using Big Data to Understand and Mitigate Climate Change

Ecology and Environment

MSI PI Vipin Kumar, a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was interviewed by Sierra magazine recently. Professor Kumar discussed using data-driven methods to track deforestation. The interview can be found on the Sierra Club’s website: The “Big Science” Behind Climate Change.

Professor Kumar uses MSI for several projects involving big data. These include data-driven approaches to studying climate change, monitoring land cover changes at the global scale, and using data mining and machine learning to analyze biological datasets.
