Project Title:
Properties of the Photoreceptor for Plant Responses to UV-B Light (280 - 320 nm)

This project tests the hypothesis that plant growth responses to UV-B light are due to perception by a unique photoreceptor(s), focusing on the inhibition of elongation growth of etiolated Arabidopsis hypocotyls by pulses of UV light. The experiments on this response fall into three categories: identify and characterize mutants and natural accessions of Arabidopsis, and the corresponding genes and gene products, that demonstrate a decreased sensitivity to UV-B; determine the relationship between photomorphogenic UV-B perception and signaling and DNA damage and repair; and examine protein changes and translational regulation of protein synthesis in response to photomorphogenic fluences of UV-B.
