This group is involved in multiscale fluid field investigations as well as flow structure interactions ranging from super-large scales of a utility scale turbine to flow around swimming microorganisms. They use image-based techniques like PIV and specifically Holographic PIV to investigate these problems, which involves a great deal of image processing. They also use machine learning techniques to help process the real holograms and the synthetic images in order to achieve higher accuracy. They are complementing these studies with computational studies that can both validate results as well as provide interesting avenues and hypotheses to test experimentally.
In 2020, the group started projects related to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are performing simulation tasks related to airborne transmission studies, and hope to combine experimental methods with simulation tools to provide more guidance on the mitigation of COVID-19.
