The Minnesota Traffic Observatory conducts a variety of research in the fields of traffic management, traffic safety, and transportation planning, with considerable focus on emerging technology and the potential applications to these fields. Recent research has involved significant development of systems for modeling traffic demand, mobility, and safety for use in demand forecasting and infrastructure planning, real-time alert systems, and evaluation of treatments addressing ongoing safety and serviceability concerns. Projects often require significant computing power to run high-resolution simulations and vision-based trajectory-modeling applications. During 2018, this group used MSI resources to help perform an evaluation of a work zone speed notification system using video trajectory data.
