This lab studies the ecology of fungi associated with forest trees. For this work, they perform molecular-based identification of fungal communities, utilizing both traditional (Sanger) and modern (next-gen) sequencing methods. To analyze the datasets they are generating more efficiently, they are using the Mesabi and Itasca clusters. In particular, these analyses involve de novo sequencing clustering, which is computationally intensive and so benefits from the core and processing power available through MSI.
The researchers are beginning to do some genomics and transcriptomics work that will benefit from access to the software and expertise available through MSI (e.g. Galaxy, Spotfire).
