Project Title:
Thrifty Food Plan Price Index and the Real Value of SNAP

This project uses index number methods to investigate the temporal and spatial price patterns for the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) basket to evaluate the extent to which the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) are affected by variation in price levels over time and across the continental United States. Specifically, the researchers construct panel price indices for the TFP basket using retail scanner data. Retail scanner data provides high frequency store level prices and sales information on consumer purchases and allows us to generate monthly price indices.
