Pattern Formation

This group investigates pattern selection in directional quenching experiments. They are interested in how the (moving) quenching line triggers the formation of crystalline structures and how defects emerge in the patterns depending on quenching rate and aspect ratios. They study simple systems such as the Cahn-Hilliard equation and the Swift-Hohenberg equation in two and three space-dimensions. These investigations use both direct simulation and numerical continuation.
